LG bodies: NPP-lone candidates in talks to form ‘majority’

The ruling National People's Power (NPP) Party stated that while discussions have already begun with individual representatives to form administrations in Local Government (LG) bodies where they (NPP) lack a majority, they would however not enter into coalitions with parties with opposing political views.

In the LG Elections, the NPP won the majority in 339 LG bodies, but failed to secure more than 50% of the total representation in many of them, as Opposition political parties and independent groups collectively surpassed the NPP.

When queried by The Daily Morning as to how they would form administrations in NPP General Secretary and Government Parliamentarian, Dr. Nihal Abeysinghe said that they would not form any political alliances with parties or groups that hold opposing views in LG bodies where they lack a majority.

"In LG bodies where it is difficult for us to form a Council or Sabha on our own, we are open to discussions with representatives that we believe share values compatible with ours. That process has already begun. It is up to them to decide whether they want to work with us. Everyone in politics has their own policies, and if both sides believe that they can work together, then, it can move forward," he added.

The NPP-elected 3,926 councilors and members secured a majority in more than 250 LG bodies in the LG Elections. However, they managed to secure overall control only in around 115 bodies. The main Opposition, the Samagi Jana Balawegaya secured 1,766 seats while the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna won 742 seats. The United National Party and the People’s Alliance won 381 and 300 seats, respectively. The Sarvajana Balaya secured 226 seats in LG bodies across the country.
