Ex-Presidents’ foreign trips: MR tops the list; followed by Ranil, Sirisena, Gota

  • MR spent Rs. 3,572 m during 2010-14 with Rs. 1,144 m in 2013 alone; RW Rs. 533 m during 2023-24; MS Rs. 384 m during 2015-19; GR Rs. 126 m during 2020-22


Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya revealed the total expenditure on foreign trips made by former Presidents. 

The details revealed during yesterday’s (27) Parliamentary session shed light on the financial costs incurred by the State for Presidential travels over the years.

The Premier provided the following breakdown of the foreign trip expenses for each former President: Mahinda Rajapaksa (2010-2014) – Rs. 3,572 million; Maithripala Sirisena (2015-2019) – Rs. 384 million; Gotabaya Rajapaksa (2020-2022) – Rs. 126 million; and Ranil Wickremesinghe (2023-2024) – Rs. 533 million. Incumbent President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has spent Rs. 1.8 million during the period from September 2024 to this month.

She highlighted that the highest expenditure during the period from 2010 to 2025 was recorded in 2013, when President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s foreign trips cost the State Rs. 1,144 million.
