The public has been alerted to fraudulent social media messages offering free mobile data in celebration of Vesak, known as "Data Dansal."
According to the Sri Lanka Computer Emergency Readiness Team (SLCERT), scammers are circulating fake links that claim to provide free data but are actually designed to steal personal information.
Senior Information Security Engineer Charuka Damunupola warned that while legitimate data donations do exist, many links shared via WhatsApp and chat groups are scams.
These links redirect users to malicious websites that collect sensitive details like names, NIC numbers, and dates of birth.
Authorities urge the public to be cautious and verify the authenticity of such offers before clicking on links.
