Cabinet approves SIM re-registration amendments

10 Feb 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Cabinet has approved amendments to SIM card registration regulations, including provisions to re-register subscriber details for SIM cards issued before 2 August, 2019.

The move aims to address gaps in subscriber information that have hindered legal and criminal investigations.

The amendments will also introduce new rules for registering subscribers aged 16–17 and issuing SIM cards to foreign nationals visiting Sri Lanka.

The proposal was submitted by the President Anura Kumara Dissanayaka in his capacity as Minister of Digital Economy and is expected to strengthen regulatory oversight, improve data accuracy, and support law enforcement and national security needs.
