Speaking to the Labour Minister and Economic Development Deputy Minister Dr. Anil Jayantha, automobile and electronics importers have raised concerns of market imbalances and reduced product quality caused by unregulated imports of electronic goods brought into the country illegally, according to a statement released by the Presidential Media Division (PMD).
Representatives of the industry met with the minister for a pre-budget discussion held on Tuesday (16) at the Presidential Secretariat.
Importers emphasised that such practices result in significant revenue loss for the government and raise concerns about product standards for consumers, urging prompt government action to address these issues.
Fernando stated that all productive proposals from industry experts would be considered in preparing the upcoming budget. He also noted that, if necessary, new regulations would be introduced to ensure the importation of quality products.
Furthermore, Fernando confirmed that laws would be strictly enforced against organised groups importing goods through illegal channels, according to the PMD.
