GSMB and NBRO begin 3 week safety mapping for rebuilding

05 Jan 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Geological Survey and Mines Bureau (GSMB) has deployed special teams to cyclone-hit areas to conduct a rigorous three-week assessment of land safety and infrastructure feasibility.

GSMB Chairman Saman Jayasinghe stated that the primary goal is to identify "safe zones" for new housing projects while marking high-risk areas where further construction will be restricted.

Infrastructure Feasibility: Beyond housing, the teams are conducting structural integrity tests on damaged bridges, culverts, and roads. This will determine if these structures can be safely rebuilt in their original locations or if they must be relocated due to changed terrain.

The mission is being carried out alongside the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), ensuring that mapping aligns with the latest landslide and soil stability data.
