The Commissioner General of Essential Services has issued new guidelines for the prudent use of fuel and energy, targeting Ministry Secretaries, provincial and district officials, and government institutions.
The measures, announced on 22 March aim to mitigate potential disruptions to fuel imports caused by escalating Middle East tensions.
Officials are advised to avoid using personal vehicles for commuting, opting instead for public or group transport, and to prepare daily transport plans to reduce vehicle usage.
Energy conservation measures include maximizing natural light, reducing air conditioning reliance, and limiting elevator use by encouraging stairs.
Local authorities are instructed to switch off unnecessary streetlights and temporarily disable lighting in low-security areas.
The use of daytime televisions in government offices is discouraged, and staff are encouraged to work remotely where possible. Offices should remain closed after hours and on weekends unless essential.
The guidelines emphasise responsible conduct among public officials and support for national energy-saving efforts. Deputy Minister Chathuranga Abeysinghe also urged the public to conserve electricity between 6:00 p.m.
