The Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, Nishantha Anuruddha Weerasinghe, announced that driver licenses issued before 2009 will be revoked within three months.
Around 300,000 old licenses are pending printing and will be immediately canceled.
The update includes 1.4 million commercial vehicle licenses.
A new demerit point system and temporary suspension for traffic violations will also be introduced.
License holders are advised to get a medical certificate and apply for new licenses.
