Energy Minister Anura Karunathilaka has stated that Sri Lanka could exceed its target of generating 70% of electricity from renewable sources by 2030, amid rising global fuel costs.

The government plans to expand solar power capacity to nearly 4,400 megawatts by 2029 and add five major transmission lines from 2027 to strengthen the national grid.

The government is also considering a new pricing model for privately generated solar electricity and plans to expand battery storage to improve grid stability.

Sri Lanka’s longer-term goal is to generate 90% to 95% of its electricity from renewable sources, according to the Minister.
