Grama Niladhari officers have decided to take sick leave islandwide today (10) and tomorrow (11), citing the failure to increase their travel allowance and address other demands.

Grama Niladhari Trade Union Alliance Chairman Nandana Ranasinghe stated that the current Rs. 600 travel allowance has not been increased for eight years.

He noted that Cabinet approval was granted in 2024 to replace the allowance with an amount equivalent to the cost of 20 litres of fuel.
