Purpose: There’s a powerful exhibition at the Radicle Gallery from 8 May to 7 June, titled ‘Take A Chill Pill,’ an exhibition that refuses to do what its title commands.

The line-up is an artistic powerhouse, from established and acclaimed artists to newer names making powerful waves: Anoma Wijewardene, Iromie Wijewardena, Anoli Perera, Asela Abeywardena, Chiranthika Thanthreewaththa, Malki Jayakody, Nihara Cooray, Nimna Wickramasinghe, Omali Radhika, Thilini Jinadasa, Ifadha Hassen, and Raneesha Kapunaara.

Posting on Facebook about her work at the exhibition, which forms part of her series titled ‘Invisible Woman: Emerging Woman,’ Anoma shared: “My collection is both witness and tribute. To suffering, to resilience, and to women who refuse invisibility…”

Asela posted: “With this ‘Warrior Poet’ collection I aim to explore the paradoxes of masculinity by manipulating, adorning, and re-defining the male human form. The essence of this concept is especially attributed to ‘Bushido: The Way of the Samurai’. I have attempted to emulate the ancient East Asian aesthetics of blue and white porcelain, kintsugi, and body adornment to symbolise the contrasting nature of masculine roles.”

Curated by Mandira Ranathunga, ‘Take A Chill Pill’ features a variety of perspectives and different generations of local female artists who use their work to question how much a woman is ‘allowed to take’.

Go. Observe. Absorb. Bear witness to women defining their own boundaries.
