The Colombo Magistrate’s Court (MC) ordered the release of 34 individuals, including Joseph Stalin, Secretary of the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU), in a case related to a 2021 protest. 

The protest, organised by the Inter University Students’ Federation (IUSF), CTU, and the Frontline Socialist Party (FSP), opposed the General Sir John Kotelawala National Defence University Bill and violated quarantine regulations. 

The individuals were arrested on 8 July 2021, under the Quarantine and Prevention of Diseases Ordinance. 

The case was heard today (6) before Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Rathnayake.
