A private bus carrying around 40 passengers overturned after being attacked by a wild elephant on the Kataragama–Buttala Road at around 11.00 a.m. today (3).
The incident occurred near the electric fence checkpoint within the Kataragama Police Division.
The bus was travelling towards Buttala after bringing pilgrims from Chilaw to Kataragama when the elephant suddenly attacked the vehicle, causing the driver to lose control.
Around 10 passengers were injured and admitted to Kataragama Hospital. Hospital sources stated that none of the injured passengers were in serious condition.
Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
