Heavy rainfall across Sri Lanka has led to significant road disruptions and heightened risks of landslides and floods, prompting authorities to issue wide-ranging alerts.
The Badulla–Colombo main road has been restricted to a single lane between Beragala and Haldummulla after a landslide occurred last night (24).
Police confirmed the restriction, though the Disaster Management Center (DMC) warned the area remains at risk of further landslides.
Road Development Authority (RDA) officers are scheduled to inspect the site today (25). Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organization (NBRO) is considering opening the closed Lower Kadugannawa Road to a single lane during dry periods, but no final decision has been reached.
The NBRO maintained a landslide warning for seven districts—Badulla, Kandy, Kegalle, Matale, Kurunegala, Nuwara Eliya, and Ratnapura.
A Level 2 landslide warning was also issued for Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, and Colombo districts, urging residents to remain vigilant.
Further impact was noted by the Department of Irrigation, reporting that water levels in the Kalu, Gin, and Nilwala rivers have risen.
The Nilwala River has reached overflowing levels in the Thalagahagoda and Panadugama areas. To manage reservoir levels, six spill gates of the Deduru Oya Reservoir have been opened by four feet each, resulting in a large discharge of water.
