Leader of the Sarvajana Balaya, Dilith Jayaweera, has described the Sinhala and Tamil New Year as the grand festival of Sri Lankan culture with both cultural and scientific significance.
He noted that the New Year provides an opportunity for individuals and the nation to reflect on past shortcomings and begin anew, while also offering a refreshing break spent with loved ones.
Jayaweera emphasized that the festival plays a vital role in passing down values such as gratitude, responsibility, and maintaining relationships, adding that the simultaneous observance of rituals across the country makes Sri Lanka unique.
He further described the New Year as a valuable national heritage that must be protected for future generations, while warning that it currently faces certain challenges.
