Colombo is falling in love

  • Valentine’s Day in the city

Valentine’s Day always seems to roll around just in time to rescue us from the cold, dragging dredges of January. Suddenly, there’s another reason to celebrate again, another excuse to dress up, step out, and make a memory or two.

This year, Valentine’s Day feels refreshingly less confined by tradition. It is no longer reserved solely for romantic partners but has grown into a celebration of connection in all its forms. Whether it is a partner, best friend, sibling, parent, or even a moment of self-love, the day has evolved into an opportunity to pause, gather, and appreciate the relationships that shape our lives.

For those looking to mark the occasion with something a little more memorable than an ordinary Saturday evening, Colombo and its surrounding areas are offering a wide array of experiences, from elegant dining and indulgent high teas to creative workshops and even fitness-focused celebrations.

An evening by the lake: Cinnamon Lakeside

For couples drawn to classic romance, Cinnamon Lakeside presents its Valentine’s offering titled ‘Dine With Your Valentine.’ Set against the calming waterside backdrop that the property is known for, the evening promises an elegant dining experience designed to complement the occasion.

Taking place on 14 February from 7–11 p.m., the experience is priced at Rs. 8,500++ per person. The setting itself, paired with thoughtfully curated cuisine, makes it an appealing choice for those who prefer timeless romantic celebrations.

Intimate dining for two: Ramada Colombo

Ramada by Wyndham Colombo offers a more intimate yet equally charming dining experience through a carefully designed five-course sit-down dinner for two. The experience is enhanced with thoughtful touches, such as a red rose presented to partners and sparkling wine served to mark the evening.

Scheduled for 14 February from 7 p.m. onwards, the experience is priced at Rs. 6,350++ per couple, offering couples a cosy yet refined setting to celebrate together.

A weekend of romance: Shangri-La Colombo

Shangri-La Colombo extends Valentine’s celebrations beyond a single evening, offering a collection of experiences throughout the week leading up to and including 14 February.

At the Central restaurant, the Valentine’s dinner experience titled ‘Where Love Gathers at the Table’ will take place on 14 February from 6.30 p.m. to 10.30 p.m., priced at Rs. 8,900++ per person. For those seeking a more elevated culinary experience, Capital Bar & Grill will host ‘A Culinary Love Story,’ offering a candlelit, course-by-course dining journey priced at Rs. 17,500++ per person.

Meanwhile, those who prefer quieter daytime celebrations can enjoy the Valentine’s Afternoon Tea experience at Sapphyr Lounge, available from 7 to 15 February between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., priced at Rs. 6,250++ per person. Shangri-La also offers curated Valentine’s gift boxes through Little Gems, perfect for those who prefer expressing affection through meaningful gestures.

Romance in the afternoon: Me Colombo

For couples who prefer relaxed daytime celebrations, Me Colombo offers a Valentine’s Exclusive High Tea Platter available from 13–15 February. The experience allows guests to celebrate love over delicately curated sweet and savoury selections in a relaxed setting.

Me Colombo also hosts its ‘Dinner of Hearts’ experience on 14 February, offering a specially curated four-course romantic dinner priced at Rs. 5,500++ per person.

Love along the southern coast: The Cliff Weligama

For those willing to venture beyond Colombo, The Cliff Weligama offers a Valentine’s experience shaped by the beauty of Sri Lanka’s southern coastline. The property presents multiple settings, allowing guests to choose their preferred ambience – from sunset dinners on The Lawn and intimate escapes at The Cove to candlelit long-table celebrations along The Path or dining beneath tree canopies on The Terrace.

Each space offers a distinct atmosphere while maintaining the signature coastal elegance the property is known for.

‘Sole Mates Run Together’

While dining remains a popular Valentine’s tradition, this year’s offerings also reflect a growing appetite for alternative ways of celebrating connection.

For couples who prefer shared goals over shared desserts, Abans, together with Under Armour, introduces ‘Sole Mates Run Together.’ The event, scheduled for 14 February at 7.30 a.m., begins at the UA Brandhouse at the Colombo Race Course Mall and features a 4 km run across two laps.

Adding a competitive twist, the first five couples to register will receive Rs. 10,000 vouchers each, offering fitness enthusiasts a unique and energising way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

Clay tray painting at Café No. 413

For those who enjoy hands-on experiences, Café No. 413 in collaboration with PlantQ Ceylon presents a Valentine’s Day tray painting workshop. Taking place throughout 14 February from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Café No. 413 on Havelock Road, the experience allows participants to create personalised keepsakes while enjoying a relaxed café setting.

Priced from Rs. 2,000 per person, the package includes Rs. 500 redeemable on food and beverages.

A celebration that continues to evolve

Valentine’s Day in Colombo continues to expand beyond traditional definitions, offering experiences that cater to diverse expressions of love and companionship. Whether it is candlelit dinners, creative workshops, coastal escapes, or sunrise fitness runs, the city offers numerous ways to celebrate relationships that matter.

Perhaps the most meaningful shift in recent years is how Valentine’s Day is no longer about fitting love into a singular mould. Instead, it invites people to celebrate affection in its many forms, quietly, joyfully, creatively, or extravagantly, but always sincerely.
