Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has stated that the Government’s objective is to make public transport a more convenient and safer choice for the people.

She made the remarks while attending the opening of the renovated Bambalapitiya Railway Station under the “Dream Destination” project yesterday (10).

The Prime Minister stated that improving public spaces and facilities can encourage greater public interest in public transport. She also noted that the Government’s increased allocation of funds for the sector demonstrates its commitment to improving public transport services.

Deputy Minister of Urban Development Eranga Gunasekara stated that increased funding would be allocated to Sri Lanka Railways next year. He also stated that work on an electric railway system is expected to commence next year, covering routes from Maradana to Makumbura, Panadura and Ragama.

The renovated station and a new pedestrian overpass were developed under the “Dream Destination” project, with a Rs. 60 million contribution from the Dawoodi Bohra community in Sri Lanka.
