Railway trade unions began a 48-hour strike from midnight on 16 September over several demands, including the removal of the current General Manager of Railways.
Railway Station Masters’ Union Chairman Sumedha Somarathna stated that several trains had been cancelled yesterday before the strike began, inconveniencing passengers.
He claimed that most station masters had joined the strike and said the action was not politically motivated, but aimed at restoring the Railway Department.
Passengers were inconvenienced by cancellations at Fort Railway Station yesterday afternoon.
