Responding to a question from The Daily Morning regarding outstanding rate payments, Kumara said yesterday (6) that at present, it is ongoing, as the people were gradually paying their outstanding taxes to the Council. Fielding further questions, he said however that the Council would have to calculate the old overdue payments which would take some time. He said that a large amount of rates were overdue as the collections had been carried out irregularly.
According to reports however, the CMC has been unable to collect over Rs. 400 million as rates by end of last year (2025). According to reports, there were close to 30,000 properties within the City limits with outstanding rates.
Meanwhile, Hemantha said the Council had sought proposals from its citizens on the improvement of facilities and City development. They could submit proposals as to how the City roads could be further developed, and on the enhancement of playgrounds, mother and child clinics, and the Ayurveda centres.
Several efforts to contact the Municipal Treasurer and the Deputy Municipal Treasurer (Finance and Administration) proved futile.
