President weighs in on June electricity tariff hikes

03 May 2025 | BY Staff Writer

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake stated that electricity tariffs will be increased in June, highlighting the need for cost-reflective pricing in line with International Monetary Fund (IMF) recommendations.

According to the President, this decision was made as the Treasury can no longer afford to subsidise the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB). He added that the Government will continue to offer relief to vulnerable groups.

President Dissanayake also revealed that the CEB accumulated around Rs. 220 billion in debt, which was since restructured. He further explained that this move aims to protect Sri Lanka’s energy sovereignty, which is vital to national security.
