UNP questions access to FBI investigation on Easter Sunday Attacks

18 Jun 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The United National Party (UNP) has issued a statement regarding the ongoing investigations into the 2019 Easter Sunday terror attacks.

The party noted that shortly after the attacks on 21 April 2019, then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe requested assistance from the United States Government for a full investigation, stating that Sri Lankan investigative bodies lacked certain technical expertise. Full cooperation was also assured to US authorities.

Following this, the FBI conducted a joint investigation with Sri Lankan agencies, including the CID, Military Intelligence, and State Intelligence Service. The FBI later submitted its findings to the Sri Lankan government, which were reportedly accepted by local authorities.

The statement further highlights that on 12 November 2020, an FBI Special Agent filed a detailed affidavit in a US court, followed by a criminal case filed in December 2020 at the US District Court in Los Angeles against several suspects, some of whom were already in custody in Sri Lanka.

The UNP also raises questions over whether the current Sri Lankan government has formally requested access to the full FBI investigation materials from the US authorities, stressing that such information should be made available to Sri Lankan judicial bodies for further proceedings.
