Opposition flags ‘rule of law crisis’ in urgent appeal to international bodies

A coalition of Sri Lanka’s opposition parties, including former President Ranil Wickremesinghe Leader of the United National Party and Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa Leader of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya, has raised concerns with international legal bodies over what it describes as a worsening rule of law crisis.

In a joint letter, the opposition cited a rise in violence, noting that more than 60 people were killed in shootings last year, with nine more deaths reported so far this year.

The parties highlighted the 13 February killing of attorney-at-law Buddhika Mallawarachchi and his wife near a high-security zone, calling it a turning point that shook the legal community.

The opposition criticised the Police for making premature claims linking the killing to the victim’s professional work, alleging an attempt to downplay the seriousness of the crime.

It also warned of growing political pressure on the judiciary and legal institutions, claiming that due process and natural justice are being undermined.

Concerns were further raised over a proposed anti-terrorism law, which the opposition said could be used to suppress dissent and target media institutions, potentially breaching international obligations, including the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

The politicisation of the Police and lack of accountability in sensitive investigations were also flagged.

The opposition further accused Minister of Public Security Ananda Wijepala of failing to maintain law and order.

Urging international legal and professional bodies to take note, the opposition called for intervention to safeguard democratic values and the rule of law in Sri Lanka.
