• How music transformed a band’s musical journey

Music has always been important to our local community. It has been an expression of our sorrows, joys and triumphs in our environment. Sri Lankan rock and roll band Dotdotay says it is what gives music its unique quality.

“Music has always been so important and is essential that we explore it,” Dotdotay lead vocalist Hidayaath Hazeer, told The Daily Morning Brunch. 

Finding uniqueness

Many bands have had to struggle to have their voice heard. In a music scene that is often crowded with cover bands and familiar sounds, originality can feel like both a risk and a necessity. For Dotdotay, the challenge was never about fitting in but about creating a space that felt honest to who they were as musicians and storytellers.

“In the beginning, it was tempting to sound like everyone else just to be popular,” bassist Riyal Riffai said. “You listen to what’s popular, what gets radio play and you think maybe that’s the direction you should go in. But we realised very early on that if we didn’t sound like ourselves, there was no point.”

That search for authenticity became central to the band’s journey. Drawing from a mix of alternative rock, local influences and deeply personal experiences, Dotdotay began experimenting with sound, lyrics and structure. Their music slowly evolved from rehearsed imitations into something more raw and reflective, mirroring their own growth as individuals.

Rooted in local stories

What sets Dotdotay apart is the way their music remains grounded in the Sri Lankan experience. Rather than shying away from local realities, the band embraces them with subtle references to everyday life, exploring emotional topics that shaped the country’s social climate and themes that resonate deeply with their audience.

“Our environment influences everything,” Riffai said. “You can’t create in isolation. What’s happening around you, what people are feeling, the conversations you overhear, those things play a role into the music whether you want them to or not.”

This connection to place has allowed the band to form a strong bond with listeners who see fragments of their own lives reflected in the songs. In a time where global trends often dominate our playlists, Dotdotay’s commitment to telling local stories feels both refreshing and necessary.

The evolution of sound

Like most bands, Dotdotay’s musical identity did not emerge fully formed. It was shaped through trial and error, late-night jam sessions and performances that didn’t always go as the band wanted. Each mistake, however, became part of the learning process.

“You don’t figure out your sound overnight,” Hazeer said. “It changes as you change. The music we made a few years ago doesn’t feel the same anymore and that’s okay. It means we’re growing.”

For the band, growth is less about perfection and more about being true to who they are. 

Music as connection

Beyond creative expression, music has become a way for Dotdotay to connect with each other and with their audience. Live performances, in particular, have played a significant role in shaping their journey.

“There’s something powerful about playing live,” Riffai said. “You feel the energy in the room. You see how people react, which parts they connect with. It reminds you why you started in the first place.”

These moments of connection have reinforced the band’s belief in music as a shared experience rather than a one-sided performance. Whether playing to a packed arena or a smaller more intimate crowd, Dotdotay approaches each show with the goal to create a space where people can feel seen and understood.

Navigating challenges

The path of an independent band is rarely easy and Dotdotay is no exception. Limited resources, inconsistent platforms and the struggle to balance artistic integrity with sustainability are challenges they continue to navigate.

“There are times when it feels overwhelming,” Riffai said. “But the love for music always brings us back. Even on difficult days, we remind ourselves why we’re doing this.”

Support from the local music community has also played a crucial role. Fellow musicians, small venues and loyal listeners have helped sustain the band through uncertain periods, proving that collaboration and solidarity remain vital within Sri Lanka’s  music and entertainment industry.

Looking ahead

As Dotdotay continues to grow, the band remains focused on staying true to its roots while exploring new creative possibilities. Future projects promise further experimentation, both sonically and thematically, as they continue to reflect on identity, belonging, and change.

“We don’t want to limit ourselves,” guitarist Mewan Kaushika said. “As long as the music feels honest, we’re open to where it takes us.”

The band has performed in several parts of Sri Lanka including Hiriketiya, Ahangama and Kalpitiya.

In a world that often demands quick success and constant visibility, Dotdotay’s journey serves as a reminder that meaningful art takes time. Through perseverance, authenticity, and a deep respect for music as an emotional language, the band has transformed not only its sound but also its understanding of what it means to create.

For Dotdotay, music remains more than just sound but a memory, connection and soul.
