Nine Arch Bridge: Railways to probe ‘water leak’ reports?

05 May 2025

The Department of Railways yesterday (4) stated that it would look into the water leak reported at the Nine Arch Bridge in Ella, on the Upcountry Railway Line, and take appropriate action.

The statement was made following reports that a water leak became visible at the Nine Arch Bridge during periods of heavy rainfall. Broadcast media reported yesterday that linesmen on the railway line had noticed the alleged ‘leak’.

Speaking to the media on the reports, Sri Lankan Railways (SLR) General Manager Dhammika Jayasundara said that the Railways Department had not received any formal notification about the incident yet. However, he said that the department would promptly investigate the issue and take appropriate action.

In addition, Jayasundara said that the necessary action would be taken to examine nearby construction activities around the bridge, and pursue legal action against those responsible for unauthorised developments.

The Ella Nine Arch Bridge, built in 1921 between the Ella and Demodara railway stations, is a popular tourist destination for both locals and foreign nationals. Its surrounding area has seen a steady increase of tourism due to the bridge’s architectural ingenuity and the profuse greenery in the nearby hillsides.
