- 17 suspects repatriated thus far
Within just one year, the Sri Lanka Police has requested the issuance of 200 Interpol Red Notices, according to Sri Lanka Police Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) F.U. Wootler.
Following these requests, the Police has successfully extradited 17 suspects to Sri Lanka.
ASP Wootler confirmed that all the Red Notices had been issued after the new Government took office.
While the 17 individuals have been brought back to the country, he emphasised that their convictions were still pending as the legal process continues.
Highlighting the complexities of international law enforcement, ASP Wootler explained: “Extradition can only take place after mutual agreements, based on reciprocal treaties between the involved countries, have been adopted. These processes can take time and require extensive transnational coordination. Given the complex procedures, the results achieved so far are plausible.”
When asked about the nature of the offences for which the Red Notices had been issued, he said that such details were not immediately available but noted that more information could be provided in the future.
