- Rs 380,000 stolen from three-wheeler driver
Two police constables (PC) attached to the Mount Lavinia Police have been arrested over the alleged assault and robbery of a three-wheeler driver carrying Rs 380,000 in cash.
Police stated the two PCs, attached to the complaints division of the Mount Lavinia Police, were arrested following investigations conducted by the Mount Lavinia Divisional Crimes Investigation Bureau.
The complaint was lodged by a resident of Sayurupura Housing Scheme in Angulana, who claimed he was stopped by two unidentified men on a motorcycle while driving along Airport Road in Ratmalana on 15 May. The suspects allegedly assaulted him and robbed the cash in his possession.
Investigators later became suspicious about the origin of the money, initially claimed to be linked to a chit fund. Further inquiries reportedly revealed that the cash allegedly belonged to a large-scale drug trafficker known as Kudu Anju from Ratmalana, who is believed to be operating the narcotics business from overseas. Police stated the complainant had been transporting the money at the time of the robbery.
A 55-year-old female from the Angulana area, who allegedly handed over the money to the complainant, was also arrested after failing to prove her claim that the cash came from a chit fund. The female had previously been arrested in connection with drug trafficking activities linked to Kudu Anju.
All suspects are due to be produced before the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court.
