The final decision on cultivation activities for the upcoming Maha season will be made on 18 September 2026, Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation D.P. Wickramasinghe stated.
Speaking at a media briefing today (4), he stated that an initial discussion with all relevant sectors will be held on 8 September to plan the upcoming cultivation season.
The final decision will be taken on 18 September in Peradeniya, with the participation of farmers, Mahaweli representatives, the Water Panel and other relevant parties.
The Department of Meteorology will also participate in the discussions this year due to the El Niño conditions affecting the country.
The discussions will cover the commencement of paddy cultivation, cultivation of other crops and the allocation of water for agricultural activities.
