It is reported that the historic city of Kandy is struggling with an escalating waste issue as thousands of devotees gather for the exposition of the Sacred Tooth Relic at the Sri Dalada Maligawa.
Accordingly, streets surrounding the temple are littered with garbage, including polythene bags, plastic bottles, and food wrappers.
Devotees waiting in long queues expressed frustration over the lack of proper waste disposal facilities. A Municipal Council official explained that many visitors bring snacks, water bottles, and other items for their wait, but often leave their waste behind as the lines move forward.
Local residents and environmental groups have voiced concerns, warning that Kandy’s scenic beauty is being overshadowed by the growing garbage problem during major religious events. They are calling for more waste bins and awareness campaigns to help maintain the city’s cleanliness.
