The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People’s Power (NPP) Government has decided to give prominence to conducting probes into allegations levelled against individuals who have played prominent roles in successive governments concerning corruption, financial fraud, and the accumulation of wealth by illegal means.

Accordingly, one of the key individuals facing a probe on the alleged accumulation of wealth in an illegal manner is former Minister Basil Rajapaksa. The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) is reportedly conducting a probe on an allegation that had claimed that Basil had purchased a house in the US using monies accumulated in an illegal manner.

This revelation was made by former Member of Parliament (MP) Wimal Weerawansa in 2022 after he defected from the then Gotabaya Rajapaksa Government.

Weerawansa had been requested by the CID to visit the department and provide a statement on the allegation levelled by him against Basil in 2022 and to provide any evidence in his possession to prove the allegation.

Weerawansa had been asked to visit the CID on Friday (3) morning to give a statement on his allegation against Basil.
