At the 2nd Hayashi-Ha International Open Karate Championship held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Bigun D.K. Fernando of St. Anthony's Maha Vidyalaya, Thoduwawa won a bronze medal in the kata event (age 14-15) and a bronze medal in the kumite event (age 14-15, +67kg) category.

Athletes from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Thailand participated in the tournament.
