An audit report for 2024 has revealed that 100 theft incidents involving electrical cables, copper wires, streetlight poles and other equipment were reported on the Colombo-Katunayake Expressway from 2021 to 2023.

The value of 11 thefts was estimated at Rs. 580 million, while the value of the remaining 89 had not been determined.

The audit noted that the electrical cables along the expressway median could be easily cut and removed due to the way they had been installed.

It further revealed that the estimated cost of repairing damage across the entire expressway would exceed Rs. 1.77 billion, while sufficient action had not been taken to identify those responsible.
