The Office of Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya has warned the public not to be misled by fake news created using the Premier’s name, photographs and video footage.

In a statement, the Office stated that it had observed fabricated news content circulating on social media platforms.

According to the statement, certain individuals had created fake videos portraying the Premier making statements and false social media posts using her image. These posts reportedly contain misinformation relating to business opportunities, employment opportunities, as well as the country’s economy and tax policies.

The statement further noted that such false content had been created using artificial intelligence and modern technological tools. The public has been urged to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to such misinformation.

The Office also warned that creating and distributing false information intended to damage the Government or the Premier’s reputation is a punishable offence under the law.
