The Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) has launched an investigation into allegations that former Minister Basil Rajapaksa misused over Rs. 1.03 billion in public funds during the period from 2010 to 2015.

In a complaint lodged with the CIABOC, the Citizens Power Against Bribery, Corruption, and Waste organisation President Kamantha Thushara said that the alleged misuse of State resources is detailed in the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry to investigate and inquire into Serious Acts of Fraud, Corruption and Abuse of Power, State Resources and Privileges (PRECIFAC) appointed by former President Maithripala Sirisena.

Between 2 June 2010 and 7 November 2014, Rajapaksa is said to have used Air Force aircraft for domestic travel, spending Rs. 155,451,612 from the ‘Maga Neguma’ project. The complaint also states that he used 14 vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat – including three luxury vehicles used for security and 11 other vehicles – resulting in a loss of Rs. 612,000,000 to the State.

In addition, from 10 January 2010 to 10 January 2015, 64 Navy personnel and 84 Army personnel were allegedly assigned for his personal security, with Rs. 264,370,800 in public funds spent on their salaries and allowances.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, Thushara said that these details were clearly outlined in the PRECIFAC report, and urged that legal action be taken against all those responsible, including the officials involved.

In response to his complaint, the CIABOC has informed him in writing that it initiated an investigation into the allegations. He said that he visited the CIABOC yesterday (4) to provide a statement and submit the relevant documents.
