Stroke risk: one in four people over 25 may be affected

23 Oct 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Health experts warn that one in every four people over the age of 25 may experience a stroke in their lifetime.

Speaking ahead of World Stroke Day on 29 October, Specialist Neurologist Surangi Somaratna of Kalutara Teaching Hospital noted that around 30% of stroke patients are aged between 20 and 60.

Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a risk factor in 50% of cases. Authorities urged those with hypertension to take medication as prescribed and attend health checks.

Maintaining vigilance, awareness, and healthy lifestyles is key to prevention.
