Australia and Sri Lanka continue to crackdown on illegal maritime ventures

41 individuals, attempting an illegal maritime venture to Australia, have been intercepted by the Australian Border Force(ABF).

Having been at sea for 21 days, the individuals, who left from Valaichchenai, were returned to Sri Lanka this morning (10).

Those who were aboard the illegal maritime vessel were identified as residents of Valaichchenai aged between 06 and 59.

Police spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa, commended the effectiveness of the partnership between Sri Lanka and Australia in deterring and disrupting the latest maritime venture.

“Sri Lanka Police works very closely with Australian authorities to combat the threat of people smuggling and other transnational organized crimes. It is an enduring relationship that has yielded many positive results, including today's announcement. Stopping this criminal trade in its tracks is our number one priority and we will not cease until it does," he said.

“I have a strong warning to anyone attempting to leave Sri Lanka illegally by boat. Do not risk your life or waste your money, as your boat journey will fail. People smugglers are criminals and will exploit your desperation for their gain," Thalduwa concluded.

All individuals, including the suspected organisers, were handed over to Sri Lanka Police and will now face legal proceedings.
