Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP)-led National People's Power (NPP) will await the outcome from an ongoing police investigation into an alleged foreign employment scam to decide on disciplinary actions against one of its members, The Daily Morning learned.

Police are investigating a NPP Ambalantota Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) candidate for the alleged scam.

JVP committee member Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa told The Daily Morning yesterday (12) that the party will initiate disciplinary action once the police investigations into the incidents are completed.

“If anyone in the party (JVP) has committed a wrongdoing, actions will be taken regardless of their rank. We have no problem if they have done something wrong, the actions will be taken against them. But we will take that step once the police investigations into the incidents are completed. We have taken strict action previously against some higher profiles than this. For example, when Wimal Weerawansa was removed from the party, everyone thought that the party was over. But that didn't happen. Therefore, it is not a problem for us to take action against corruption because there is no space for corruption within the NPP,” he said.

Allegations about the foreign job scam came to light when Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara revealed it in Parliament, alleging that one of the JVP members in the Ambalantota Pradeshiya Sabha has led the racket in which Sri Lankan youth have been sent abroad fraudulently obtaining money from credit cards, while also being engaged in many other fraudulent activities.

The Minister said that a JVP member related to this incident has been arrested and the arrested person has been remanded and investigations are being conducted in this regard.

Meanwhile the Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife & Forest Resources Conservation Mahinda Amaraweera said in Parliament that the executive officer who approved funds for the tainted Chinese fertiliser is now a candidate of NPP for the oncoming Local Government election.

Both alleged crimes are under investigation by different law enforcement agencies.
