A new expert committee has been appointed to investigate and resolve issues related to housing projects carried out under the National Housing Development Authority between 2015 and 2019.
The five-member panel includes two former ministry secretaries and an additional secretary, and has been tasked with identifying problems within the projects and providing recommendations within three months.
Housing, Construction and Water Supply Minister Dr. Susil Ranasinghe stated that the committee’s goal is to develop structured solutions to address delays and shortcomings in the projects.
The Cabinet recently approved the committee’s formation to ensure transparent and effective resolution of ongoing issues.
During the 2015–2019 period, plans included launching 2,562 housing projects, with a target of constructing 64,407 houses across 1,138 villages, including assistance programs and loans benefiting over 1,300 villages, some with support from the Indian government.
To date, only about 386 villages have completed housing projects, with 10,532 houses fully constructed.
It is estimated that an additional Rs. 11.26 billion will be needed to complete the remaining units.
