25 Oct 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Department of Meteorology has issued an Amber Advisory for severe lightning, warning residents in the Uva Province and the Ampara and Batticaloa districts to take precautionary measures.

The advisory issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre at 11.30 a.m. will remain in place until 11.00 p.m. today (25).

According to the Department, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are likely at several locations in the affected areas. Temporary localised strong winds may also occur during thunderstorms.

The general public has been urged to take adequate precautions to minimise the risk of injuries and damage caused by lightning.

Residents have also been advised to seek shelter indoors and avoid taking refuge under trees. They should also stay away from open areas, including paddy fields, tea plantations and water bodies, during thunderstorms.

The Department further cautioned against using wired telephones and electrical appliances connected to power sources during thunderstorms. The public has also been advised to avoid travelling in exposed vehicles such as bicycles, tractors and boats during such conditions.

People are urged to remain alert to fallen trees and damaged power lines. Emergency assistance should be sought from local disaster management authorities when necessary.

The Department of Meteorology has urged residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant and follow safety precautions throughout the advisory period.
