Social Media Journalists for Democracy has condemned the abusive verbal attacks and harassment targeting journalist Dilka Samanmali on social media, warning that such behaviour can cause serious psychological harm and erode basic standards of respect and dignity online.
In a statement, the organisation stated the sustained targeting of Samanmali reflects a misuse of social media platforms, which should serve as spaces for ethical discussion and the exchange of ideas.
It said intimidation, personal insults and organised harassment have no place in responsible digital engagement, adding that such actions amount to cyberbullying and the misuse of online platforms. The group noted that these incidents can affect the safety and mental wellbeing of individuals, particularly females.
The organisation urged social media users to act with responsibility and empathy, stressing that criticism or disagreement should not turn into personal attacks or behaviour that could cross into criminal conduct.
It also pointed out that constructive communication is key to maintaining a healthy digital space where people can express their views without fear.
The organisation also urged social media platforms and relevant authorities to take prompt and appropriate action against those responsible. It added that properly enforced community guidelines are essential to protect victims and ensure that such incidents are addressed.
