At just 17 years old, Yevan David is living a dream that many young racers aspire to achieve.
A poised and confident talent, Yevan is on the brink of making history as Sri Lanka’s first Formula 1 driver.
His journey from a wide-eyed six-year-old inspired by Lewis Hamilton to standing atop international podiums is a testament to both his immense skill and the unwavering support of a dedicated team.
Yevan’s love for racing ignited at the age of six after witnessing Hamilton’s dominance in Formula 1. “Watching drivers like Hamilton made me believe I could follow in their footsteps,” Yevan recalled.
His first laps in a go-kart were in Bandaragama in Sri Lanka, but his skills truly blossomed when he began training in Singapore. “I remember the thrill of driving for the first time,” he shared. “And from there, it just grew.”
Over the next decade, Yevan honed his craft in karting, amassing experience and accolades before making the leap to Formula 4 racing this year – a significant milestone in his career.
Competing in the F4 Spanish Championship, F4 UAE, and Euroformula Open, Yevan took on legendary circuits like Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, and Zandvoort.
His win at Monza, the home of Ferrari, remains a defining moment. “Hearing the Sri Lankan National Anthem and holding the flag was unforgettable,” he said.
A rookie podium at Zandvoort further solidified his confidence. “It was a turning point,” Yevan explained. “It made me believe I could compete at the highest levels.”
While Yevan’s raw talent is undeniable, his rise would not have been possible without the dedicated team guiding his career.
Manager Horia Totu, a seasoned motorsport professional, is the architect of Yevan’s journey. “Our role is to ensure Yevan’s development stays on track, from technical skills to race strategy,” said Totu.
His expertise helped Yevan transition seamlessly from karting to Formula 4, a leap that often challenges even the most gifted drivers.
Racing is a physically demanding sport, and Fitness Coach Alex Stott ensures that Yevan’s body is ready for the rigours of high-speed competition. “The braking systems, steering forces, and relentless G-forces require immense physical conditioning,” Stott explained.
Yevan’s fitness regime has allowed him to endure gruelling races, preparing him for greater challenges in Formula 3 and beyond.
Building Yevan’s profile is just as important as his on-track success.
Communications Manager Andy Stobart’s efforts in public relations ensure Yevan remains a relatable and inspiring figure. “Moments like these press conferences prepare Yevan for the spotlight as he climbs motorsport’s ladder,” said Stobart.
Yevan’s journey is deeply intertwined with his family’s motorsport legacy. His grandfather, Paramesh David, was a trailblazer in Sri Lanka’s racing scene, inspiring Yevan with stories of his exploits. “My grandfather taught me the value of hard work and perseverance,” Yevan reflected.
His father, Yohan David, has been a constant pillar of support, mentoring him through challenges and triumphs alike.
The pride Yevan feels for his Sri Lankan roots is evident in the lion emblem on his helmet, paired with Ferrari’s signature red. “It’s a reminder of my journey and the nation behind me,” he said.
His meteoric rise has garnered him a significant following on social media, where he shares glimpses of his life on and off the track. “Connecting with fans, especially in Sri Lanka, motivates me to keep pushing harder,” he said.
With his sights set on Formula 3 next year, Yevan remains grounded despite the pressures of racing. “This is just the beginning,” he shared. “Together with my team and supporters, I believe we can achieve even greater things.”
As Yevan prepares to take on Formula 3, the next gateway to Formula 1, he carries not just his own ambitions but the hopes of a nation.
Guided by a world-class team and fuelled by a profound sense of purpose, he is poised to put Sri Lanka on the global motorsport map.
“Racing in Formula 1 has always been my dream,” Yevan said. “I’m proud of my roots and I hope to make everyone back home proud as I chase this dream.”
Yevan is more than just a rising star; he represents the future of Sri Lankan motorsport – a young talent with the skill, determination, and support system to conquer the world’s most competitive racing circuits.
