The Irrigation Department issued a minor flood warning valid for the next 24 hours for low-lying areas of the Mahaweli River.

The warning follows rainfall received since last night(21) in several catchment areas.

Flooding is possible in Kinniya, Muttur, Kantale, Seruvila, Welikanda, Lankapura, Thamankaduwa and Dimbulagala DS Divisions.

There is a risk of inundation along the Batticaloa–Polonnaruwa Road in Gallella and access roads to the Somawathiya Raja Maha Vihara.

Residents near the river and devotees travelling to the temple are advised to remain vigilant and avoid travel until further notice.
