PM tells Parliament: 3,345 MW wind, solar to national grid by 2030

Prime Minister Dr  Harini Amarasuriya said that Sri Lanka plans to add 1,274 megawatts (MW) of wind power and 2,071 MW of solar power to the national grid under the Sustainable Energy Authority's Renewable Energy Development Plan effective from last year (2025) to 2030.

Responding to a question in Parliament yesterday (10), she said that the Government has already prepared and begun implementing the necessary plans to achieve the target. She said that renewable energy generation would be expanded under the country's long-term generation plan through a range of procurement mechanisms to enable the greater integration of clean energy into the national grid. The Government has set a target of sourcing 70 per cent of the country's electricity from renewable energy by 2030 and is implementing a series of measures to achieve that goal, she added.

The Premier added that work is also underway to strengthen and expand the national transmission and distribution network to accommodate the growing share of renewable energy. "Generating renewable energy alone is not sufficient if there is no capacity to store it," she said, adding that battery energy storage systems would play a major role in improving the stability and reliability of the power network. According to Dr Amarasuriya, procurement for 160 MW of battery energy storage capacity has already been completed whereas Cabinet of Ministers approval has been granted to proceed with the procurements for additional battery storage projects with capacities of 250 MW and 50 MW. She said the Government also plans to introduce pumped hydro energy storage systems and is conducting studies to increase the capacity of existing hydropower plants to support the transition towards a renewable energy-based electricity sector.
