Cabinet approves step toward independent public prosecutor's office

08 May 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to establish an independent Office of the Public Prosecutor, aiming to improve efficiency and transparency in Sri Lanka’s criminal justice system.

The office, separate from the Attorney General’s Department, will have provincial sub-offices and handle Government prosecutions to reduce judicial delays.

This reform aligns with a key promise in the current Government's election manifesto and a 2024 UN human rights recommendation.

A Technical Expert Committee led by Supreme Court Judge Yasantha Kodagoda has been appointed to draft new legislation and suggest necessary legal amendments.
