2025 schools rugby season: Royal ready to rumble under Amika

29 May 2025

Royal is raring to kick off the 2025 Inter-Schools Under-19 League Rugby Tournament with a highly anticipated opening clash against Thurstan College on 6 June.

Royal are set to play five matches at home, including the second leg of the 79th coveted Bradby Shield against Trinity, on 6 September.

Another crucial fixture would be the traditional clash with Isipathana for the Major Milroy Fernando Trophy.

The Colombo 7-based school’s tournament line-up also includes exciting encounters against St. Joseph’s, Vidyartha, and Sri Sumangala Kandy.

Amika Samarasinghe will lead the Royal team this year, with Idris Farook as his deputy.

The coaching responsibilities will remain in the experienced hands of former Sri Lanka and Royal skipper Dushanth Lewke.

Lewke’s stint has been marked by notable successes, including League triumphs in 2018 and 2019.

After a strong runner-up finish in 2024, Royal is geared to reclaim the League championship, aiming for their ninth overall title since 2000.

These details were announced to the press by the Royal Rugby Match Organising Committee, during a media briefing held at the Courtyard by Marriott, Hotel in Colombo on Monday (26).

The 2025 rugby season is not just a competition – it’s a celebration of tradition, sportsmanship, and school pride.

With a talented squad, seasoned leadership, and passionate supporters, Royal College is ready to make its mark on the rugby field once again, its organisers vowed.
