Fonseka accuses Rajapaksas of trying to delay end of war

02 Sep 2025 | BY Staff Writer

Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka has made strong allegations against former Presidents Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabaya Rajapaksa, claiming they tried to delay the final stages of the war against the LTTE in 2009.

Speaking at an event, Fonseka said that in January 2009, with the military just 10 kilometers from victory, Gotabaya Rajapaksa suggested he hand over command, which Fonseka interpreted as an attempt to postpone the LTTE's defeat.

He also accused Mahinda Rajapaksa of implementing a 48-hour ceasefire despite the military's objections, which he said allowed the LTTE to regroup, leading to the loss of around 500 soldiers.

Fonseka also claimed that the Rajapaksas were driven by political motives, including a fear that killing LTTE leader Prabhakaran before the 2010 election would alienate Tamil voters.

He further alleged that Mahinda Rajapaksa received $2 million from the LTTE before the 2005 presidential election to suppress voter turnout in the North.

Fonseka concluded by stating that these actions show a prioritization of political gain over the country's victory, in contrast to his own actions.
