The opposition Members of Parliament are set to hand over a motion of no-confidence against Minister of Energy Kumara Jayakody to the Speaker of Parliament today (19).

The motion alleges that the Minister has failed in his primary duty to ensure the procurement of sufficient and quality coal for the Lakvijaya Coal Power Plant in Norochcholai, describing this neglect as a serious breach of ministerial responsibility.

Additionally, the opposition points out that Minister Jayakody has been formally charged by the Colombo High Court (HC), through the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC), under Section 70 of the Bribery Act for alleged corruption during his tenure as Procurement Manager of the Ceylon Fertilizer Company Limited.

Parliamentarian Ajith P. Perera confirmed that the motion will be submitted to the Speaker this morning. Meanwhile, Parliament will also debate a separate motion today regarding the current global situation, scheduled from 2:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The debate will continue tomorrow (20), with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake expected to attend and present his views on the issues at hand.
