The Department of Meteorology has warned that increased rainfall expected across Sri Lanka in October and November could raise the risk of flooding due to strengthening El Niño conditions.

Rainy weather is expected in the south-western parts of the island over the next few days, while increased thundershowers are possible in areas that have experienced dry weather around 28 and 29 September.

Today, showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces and Galle, Matara, Kandy and Nuwara Eliya districts.

Sea areas from Kankesanthurai to Puttalam and Matara to Pottuvil could experience winds of 50–55 km/h and fairly rough seas. Naval, fishing and coastal communities have been urged to remain vigilant.
