Employers in both the public and private sectors are generally adopting a flexible approach towards employees affected by the recent natural disasters, stated the Labour Ministry.

Speaking to The Daily Morning, Labour Ministry Secretary, S.M. Piyatissa said that employers have shown understanding towards workers impacted by the floods and landslides, even though there are no specific written laws governing such situations. He said the Ministry has not received any complaints so far, indicating that employers are responding positively to the circumstances faced by the affected workers.

“There are no written laws to deal with matters like attendance or leave in such cases. Employers usually consider the situation and follow a flexible policy. The Deputy Minister Mahinda Jayasinghe also issued a media statement urging employers to adopt a flexible approach and to act with understanding towards affected employees. This request has been well received, with most employers accommodating the needs of workers dealing with the aftermath of the disaster”.

He noted that in the event of any dispute or uncertainty, employers may seek verification from the relevant local authorities, including Grama Niladharis and Divisional Secretariats, to confirm whether an employee has been affected by the disaster.

Many affected residents are still living in temporary shelters, while others have only recently returned to their homes to begin cleaning and repairs. In some cases, access to houses and workplaces remains limited due to damaged roads and unsafe conditions.
