Former Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced he will contest the Local Government Elections from Hambantota under the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP). 

He emphasised the party’s focus on young candidates while also including women and senior members. 

Rajapaksa said he is starting from the bottom again but did not disclose which local body he will contest for.
