Actress Ashika Mathasinghe on standing out in society

Ashika Mathasinghe is an actress and model who has, over the years, played a range of roles. She currently plays Minoli Jananatha in the Hitha Langa Hinahuna TV series and is well-known for this role. She has also acted in TV series like Aeya and Ahas Maliga, as well as Ice, which is also currently being aired.

In terms of modelling, Mathasinghe was second runner-up at Mrs Sri Lanka for Mrs World in 2019 and has also appeared in advertisements, one of the most known being the commercial for Kohomba soap. Mathasinghe also works hard to maintain a social media presence, something she sees as important and has over 100,000 Facebook followers, 13,000 Instagram followers, and close to 5,000 YouTube subscribers.

Despite her success over the years, Mathasinghe remains humble and balances her personal life with her career. The Daily Morning Brunch had the opportunity to sit down for a chat with the actress, during which she told us more about how unplanned her entry to the field was and what fans can expect from her in the coming days.

“I have been in the field for around 20 years. Before the Kohomba commercial, I acted in a drama, which I joined by chance. My sister’s A/L project was about a TV channel and we went to their office to get some photographs.” Mathasinghe accompanied her sister and ended up meeting a TV director, who told her about a drama he was working on, and asked her if she would like to act in it.

Filming commenced a week later, and lasted ten days. Mathasinghe said she not only made her way into the industry through this role, but also had the opportunity to audition for the Kohomba soap commercial thanks to the friends she met through the drama.

Talking about her role as Minoli Jananatha in Hitha Langa Hinahuna, Mathasinghe said it is a leading role, and that the show has a large audience. She is also returning to playing a main character after a short break, and said she is satisfied with where her career is at present.

“I’m very happy and keep track of audience feedback. Even I can’t believe the love I get from my fans,” she said, adding that she works hard during shoots, balancing her work with events she is invited to. “We have remained in this field by supporting each other so when we receive invitations for various events, we should attend them.”

Mathasinghe said she is content with the way her career is going thus far. “I studied acting. I have three children. And I balance my family life with my acting work.” She added that her husband offers her a lot of support in striking this balance. Mathasinghe has a positive attitude as well, and said that one cannot keep saying they can’t do something, and must do what is needed themselves.

“During the pandemic, I had accepted a role in Aeya. This was a character of a doctor and the shooting was in a hospital, so I had to isolate myself from my children and follow safety guidelines carefully,” she said. Even Ahas Maliga was filmed during the pandemic, but she remained committed to the roles she had accepted.

Mathasinghe is currently in talks with a production team regarding another role, but explained that she works on just two projects at a time. She has also acted in a few productions that are yet to be released. The actress has played different roles, and she said that her training under actress Anoja Weerasinghe has helped her change her characteristics and get in character. “Training has been extremely valuable to me.”

These different roles have also given Mathasinghe different perspectives, as well as an understanding of the challenges faced within various professions. This, she said, is a benefit of the industry, as an actor can play so many different roles on screen. Mathasinghe compared it to meditation.

“I don’t have high expectations, but I like to be a person who stands out in society,” Mathasinghe said, and explained that instead of limiting her life to the role of a housewife, she likes to socialise and mingle with society. This helps her, as well as her children.

“Not only do I make connections, but I also stay updated. I have accounts on all social media platforms, and even though I don’t know much about them, my daughter helps me navigate them. This keeps me in touch with other people,” she said, adding that friends her age often ask her how she navigates social media or maintains physical fitness.

However, she is determined to achieve her goal of standing out in society, and from what we observed during our conversation, Mathasinghe is definitely someone who understands how to strike a balance while making her way not only in the acting industry but also in the world.
